There are over 100 types of dementia. The most common are Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies. Symptoms include loss of memory, confusion and problems with speech and understanding.

Ginkgo biloba, claimed to have beneficial effects on memory and cognition, was not effective in reducing the rate of dementia or Alzheimer’s among a study of 1,500 elderly participants.

Alzheimer's Society is committed to defeating dementia through research. Our programme has three themes - cause, cure and care. The search for cause and cure gives us hope for the future, while research on care ensures that we are delivering the best help for the present.
